5 Ways to Boost Employee Morale and Prevent Burnout

According to the author of The High Cost of Low Morale, Carol A. Hacker, morale can be defined as “attitudes of individuals and groups toward their work, their environment, their managers, and the business.” When morale is high, teams collaborate more effectively, performance improves, and engagement thrives. Morale dips can lead to disengagement, stress, and ultimately, burnout, which in many cases may lead to high staff turnover, absenteeism or even presenteeism.

Small but intentional changes can significantly improve employee attitudes and engagement, but the question is, how do you improve staff morale? This article shares five evidence-based strategies to help staff boost morale and prevent burnout.

1. Transparent leadership

Honest and open communication builds trust and keeps employees engaged. When leaders share company goals, updates, and challenges, employees feel valued and included in the bigger picture. According to a Harvard Business Review study, people at high-trust companies report 74% less stress. Regular check-ins and open communication channels provide transparency and allow employees to voice their concerns or ideas in real time.

2. Establish a meeting-free day each week

Excessive meetings can drain energy and productivity. Consider implementing one designated meeting-free day each week to allow employees uninterrupted time to focus on deep work. A survey from Atlassian reported that 80% of respondents say they’d be more productive if they spent less time in meetings. Several top performing companies, including Canva, have adopted a ‘No Meeting Wednesday’ and seen a boost in overall productivity and job satisfaction.

3. Crowdsource team-building ideas

It’s well known that employee morale improves when teams feel connected; however, many employees cringe at the idea of forced team-building activities. Instead of enforcing top-down initiatives, ask employees what team-building activities they’d enjoy. A 2021 Deloitte survey found that workplaces that engaged employees in decision-making around culture and activities saw a 32% increase in team cohesion and collaboration. Let employees have a say in activities to increase participation and engagement, whether it’s a wellness challenge, trivia night, or casual lunch outings.

4. Go green with plants om the workspace

It seems simple, but studies suggest that bringing greenery and nature indoors can boost morale, productivity and wellbeing. Plants enhance air quality, create a calming environment, and make the office a more pleasant place to work.

5. Promote better work/life balance

Work-life balance is crucial to organisations and people and has indeed been found to contribute greatly to improving employee productivity and business performance. Encouraging a strong work/life balance can reduce the risk of burnout and increase satisfaction at work. Flexible work arrangements, mental health days, and respect for personal time outside of work can make employees feel valued and supported. Interestingly, this study found that hybrid working from home up to two days a week reduced quit rates by one-third and improved retention and job satisfaction without damaging performance.

Take the next step toward a healthier workplace

While building and nurturing a positive workplace culture requires ongoing effort, the rewards speak for themselves: higher engagement, stronger teamwork, and increased staff.
